AV Systems Designer
New York City

Gallagher & Associates is looking for a diversely talented AV Systems Designer to join our team who will be responsible for overseeing AV systems for media exhibit design from ideation to launch. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the exhibit and architectural design processes and requirements, and be able to cogently communicate to designers, architects, lighting designers, fabricators, and clients. The AV systems designer will work with the design teams to develop a fully-biddable AV hardware package throughout a phased design approach, participate in the bid negotiation phase, review shop drawings, and participate in shop and site visits.

The AV Systems Designer will report to the Technical Director and Senior Exhibit Designer, but will be working in a dynamic environment where projects develop in a collaboration with a variety of departments including physical design and interactive software development (media team).

Responsibilities include; design complete AV hardware systems including audio, visual, and show control components, create AV hardware system diagrams based on and media and exhibit design, act as primary reviewer of shop drawings and site installation, manage AV systems for multiple small to large scale projects, as needed, work with tech team to troubleshoot hardware selections. The ideal candidate will be able to creatively solve problems and achieve design intent by offering innovative hardware solutions. Candidate must be capable of the following deliverables at various phases of a project: Review exhibit design and communicate with teams for AV requirements to meet design intent. Produce Iterative AV hardware system design packages including: equipment specifications, system controls & integration, ROM and line-item cost estimating for equipment and installation, single-lines and rack drawings, equipment location and architectural requirements plans (power/data locations) projection studies, equipment heat loads and power assessment, and risk identification and mitigation plans. Participate in all phases of the design and installation process, partake in prototyping of AV setups to confirm feasibility and facilitate mockups, AV Integrator shop visits to assess operability of complex systems, partake in client meetings, and turn client and internal feedback into well documented AV system changes, coordinate with software developers to confirm system requirements are met with chosen AV equipment, review installations and ensure AV Integrators are following, intended design choices, and provide on-site installation support and troubleshooting when needed.

Qualifications include; 7+ years experience designing AV systems, 3+ years overseeing AV system installations, including feet on the ground troubleshooting experience, experience creating bid ready AV packages on small to large scale projects, expertise in all AV system components, including speakers, projectors, touch screens, computer systems, audio and video playback systems, automation systems, show control systems, networking, remote management equipment, etc., ability to reason around experimental sensors and equipment configurations, experience working with hardware for complex, software driven digital interactives, and knowledge of and experience with architectural and exhibit design processes.

Technical Project Manager

As the Technical Project Manager you are responsible for planning and overseeing the software development timeline for multiple digital interactives, concurrently. You have experience managing design-focused software applications and navigating complex development environments.

The Tech PM works closely with the Technical Director, Digital Producers and individual Team Leads to produce cross-departmental, detail-oriented, project plans based on identifiable risks and dependencies. You oversee the project(s) progress, adjusting timelines and flagging issues, as needed. The selection of software architecture is decided by the Technical Director and Leads, but you must understand the rational and the pros and cons of those choices. You will optimize the development process and streamline how internal management tools are used.

This position reports to the Technical Director.

Responsibilities include; Planning technical production timelines, working with Tech and UX Leads to define functional requirements and user stories inside Jira, working with developers to break out sub-tasks inside Jira, then monitor progress to ensure projects remain on schedule, managing multiple projects from within Jira, keeping tabs on progress towards technical deliverables including tracking cross department dependencies, spearheading the optimization and streamlining of all aspects of project production, from overall process to the utilization of specific management tools, aiding in the standardization of documentation between project phases, communicating issues, risks, and dependencies with project stakeholders, escalating where appropriate, working collaboratively with a variety of departments including physical and digital design, software development, content strategy and film production.

Qualifications include; 3-4 years experience overseeing multiple medium to large scale technical projects with complex interdepartmental dependencies and intermediary deliveries, experience defining and optimizing interdepartmental workflows specific to software development, experience working within both iterative/Agile and Waterfall based methodologies concurrently, experience in creating project plans, project tasks, milestones, and identifying dependencies, experience overseeing the creation of technical documents such as system documentation and troubleshooting documentation, experience defining technical and functional requirements, as well as working with design and tech team members to create user stories that drive technical development, an understanding of both technical and creative processes, strong interpersonal skills, able to communicate with various departments, extensive experience using Jira and Smartsheets as project management tools. Desire to learn new technologies, tackle new challenges, and grow professionally, experience managing system architecture or API design with external vendors a plus, experience working in an agency and/or creative and/or technical consultancy environment is advantageous, interested in creating experiences that tell stories, teach and impact lives, must have excellent communication and customer service skills, and an ability to maintain professionalism and a positive attitude in all situations

As a co-Lead of the Visual Design Department, you are an inspiring hands-on designer, art director, team mentor, and an expert communicator of a project’s creative vision, internally and with our clients.

Helping to refine and further develop concepts into complete, functional design systems, multi-tasking in a very fast-paced team environment, applying the best design aesthetics and manage the quality of design throughout all phases of a project, and under tight deadlines, being accountable for project deliverables in presentations, client meetings, and new business pitches, participating constructively in inter-department communications, being accountable for project scope, budget and schedule through all phases, from kick-off through delivery, having the ability to travel nationwide for client meetings at key phases of a project, and attending and taking part in talks and conventions.

Qualifications include; minimum 7-10+ years demonstrable experience in creating visual interfaces, large scale websites and/or applications for physical interactive installations, mobile or touch devices, must be process driven, demonstrate strong visual design skills, careful attention to detail, and have a solid understanding of user-centered design principles, an understanding of iterative prototyping as an essential part of the design process, fluency with common design software (Sketch app, Illustrator, Photoshop, Keynote). After Effects, 3D software, basic coding knowledge is a plus.
